Vanie AI vs PlayHT: which AI voice platform fits?

PlayHT ships a polished TTS / voice-generation API with their PlayDialog/Play 3.0 voices, but it does not run voice agents over the phone — you stitch together TTS, STT, LLM, and a telephony provider yourself. Vanie AI is a single platform: real-time voice agents (phone/SIP/WhatsApp/Telegram) on Gemini Live, over PSTN + WebRTC, with Indian carrier SIP and per-call analytics in one bill. (Standalone TTS and dubbing are on the Vanie AI roadmap, not live today.)

Where Vanie AI is stronger

  • Vanie AI is a full voice-agent platform, not just a TTS API. PlayHT gives you streaming audio; Vanie AI gives you the call, the LLM loop, the recording, and the analytics — out of the box.
  • PSTN + WebRTC are built in. PlayHT users have to bring their own Twilio, SIP, STT, and LLM and wire it all themselves. Vanie AI runs the conversation natively on Gemini Live speech-to-speech — no separate STT/TTS hops to stitch.
  • Indian compliance: TRAI time window, NCPR DND scrubbing, disclosure preamble, DPDP-aligned retention with right-to-erasure. PlayHT has no such layer because it is not a calling platform.
  • Single bill in INR via Razorpay; PlayHT is USD-only and has no plan tailored to Indian per-minute call economics.

Where PlayHT is stronger

  • PlayHT Play 3.0 and PlayDialog are excellent for long-form English narration and conversational dialogue with low TTS-only latency.
  • PlayHT offers instant voice cloning from a 3-second sample — pick it if quick custom cloned voices from a shared model pool are a hard requirement.

FAQ

Q.01
Can PlayHT make phone calls like Vanie AI?
No, not by itself. PlayHT is a TTS engine — it returns audio you stream into your own application. To place a call you would bring your own Twilio (or SIP), bring your own STT, bring your own LLM, and orchestrate them yourself. Vanie AI ships that whole stack as one product.
Q.02
Why is Vanie AI built for live conversations?
Vanie AI runs the conversation natively on Gemini Live — realtime speech-to-speech, with no separate STT→LLM→TTS hops to stitch and tune. PlayHT only owns the TTS leg; the other components are on you to assemble.
Q.03
How do the voices compare?
PlayHT has a larger English-voice library and excellent dialogue voices. Vanie AI has a smaller English set but native voices across 8 Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam), plus English.
Q.04
Which is cheaper for a calling product?
Vanie AI, decisively — one per-minute rate covers the whole spoken-conversation pipeline plus telephony orchestration. A like-for-like PlayHT build adds line items for Twilio, your STT vendor, your LLM, and the engineering to glue them.
Q.05
Can I switch from PlayHT to Vanie AI without rewriting much code?
It depends on what you built. If you were paying for Twilio + your own LLM + your own STT to assemble a calling agent on top of PlayHT's TTS, you can delete most of that orchestration code in favour of the Vanie AI agent API, which runs the whole call natively. (Standalone TTS is on the Vanie AI roadmap, not live today.)
Q.06
Is there a free trial?
Yes — 500 credits on signup, no card. That covers about 65 minutes of voice-agent time, all-in.
